Portraits
Animals dominated most of the drawings she made. After a one man show she had at the local library at age 10, she began illustrating books for children at age 12. She was taught to dance all types of dances by famous Philadelphia teachers. For many years she did the solo dance work, doing a very convincing death scene one night in a show when she accidentally took a mouthful of kerosene from a lamp. Although she makes portraits of so many animals, she focuses the most on canine portraits. She has an interesting way of starting a dog’s portrait. She draws different sketches while the owner tries to keep the dog from moving too much.
She tries to find the pose that would be most characteristic of the dog, all the while that her pencil flies over the sketchpad. She gives compliments to the dog frequently as she is doing all of this. She uses props of all shapes and sizes to maintain the animal’s interest. She makes a request from the owner of the dog for photographs that may be in his possession and asks if it’s possible to make copies of some of them for her collection.She matches the different colors in the dog’s hair by cutting snips from the tail, ears, and tummy. Animals have their own ways of evaluating things for themselves, she says. If the portrait is that of a beagle or basset, she blends in a paw print with scenery and also puts the kennel club’s identifying symbols on the back.
