At the outset the Canon PowerShot S95 seems to be just another point-and-shoot digital camera: compact, all black and stylish. Then a quick glance over the specifications and exterior control feature gets you to think otherwise.

Canon PowerShot S95 features:
10.0 megapixel CDD; the lens is a fast f2 zoom including a range of 28-105mm (corresponding to a 35 SLR equivalent).
With the exposure mode, it has Program AE and also shutter and aperture priority plus manual.
Using a hybrid IS system thePowerShot S95 provides a more developed image stabilisation, lessening camera shake by the equivalent of 4 f stops.
The PowerShot S95 has a High Dynamic Range mode achieved by simultaneously capturing three images with different kind of exposures, then combining them into one picture using in-camera software.
Maximum image size is 3648 by 2736 pixels, enabling a 31 by 23 cm print to be made at three hundred dpi. Movies: 1280 by 720 pixels at thirty fps.
And the best news goes on: you also can shoot pictures in JEPG and RAW together with simultaneous RAW JPEG files saved to the card.
The less than good news is the maximum continuous speed is only 1.9 images/second with exposure and focus set before shooting; if you need continuous focus, the capture rate is only 7 frames in 10 seconds. The PowerShot S95 will continue shooting as long as you hold on the shutter button.
- Startup Time: It took fewer than 2 seconds from power on to the 1st shot. Follow-ons about a second apart.
- Quality: Pin sharp pics, awesome tonal range.
- Distortion: There was little sign of any distortion with the zoom lens set at wide and telephoto. A decent performance.
Overall:
There is not much to criticize, besides the all-black finish makes the top power and shutter controls (also in black) being difficult to see.
I found the PowerShot S95 a pleasure to use, very pro and quick.
Why you would buy the PowerShot S95: you would prefer a vari-angle LCD screen; you need RAW capture.
Why you wouldn’t: the camera does not shoot Full HD 1920 by 1080 pixels; it does not offer Adobe RGB colour space.
Although, this is a very memorable camera.
